Rameshwor Nepal, the president of AI-Nepal, handed over a collection of 13,000 signatures to Koirala and requested the government to ratify the ICC statute at the earliest.
"The delegates have been lobbying for Nepal´s membership in ICC and the minister has assured them that the government will soon take a decision on the issue after consultations," Rudra Nepal, joint-secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was present during the talks, said. Nepal further said the minister was of the view that the issue of Nepal joining the ICC should not be "politicized" and a decision would be taken soon on the matter.
Nepal´s parliament passed a resolution motion three years ago to ratify the ICC statute. During the then Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav´s tenure, the proposal to this effect was tabled in the cabinet for approval. But the government has not taken any decision so far.
"The proposal is under consideration of the parliamentary committee. Nothing has happened so far," Nepal added.
