The administration of B P Koiralal Memorial Cancer Hospital, Bharatpur, that had remained padlocked since February 28 was unlocked on Wednesday. However, uncertainty over the resumption of health services that came to a halt on April 28 persists. [break]
The All Nepal Health Workers Association and All Nepal Progressive People´s Health Workers Association, close to the UCPN (Maoist), announced the unlocking of the hospital administration. However, they have said they will not allow Dr Singh to function in the capacity of the hospital´s executive director.
The members of the two associations had padlocked the administration supporting Dr Shrestha´s claim that there were procedural mistakes in appointing Dr Singh as executive director.
Dr Shrestha, whose three-year tenure as executive director expired in September, 2010, has been seeking reappointment and obstructing the services at the hospital with his supporters after Dr Singh, who is close to Nepali Congress, was appointed to the post.
Doctors and hospital staffers close to Dr Singh left for Kathmandu last Thursday to find a solution with the help of political leaders in Kathmandu, but their efforts did not yield any result.
In the meantime, a writ was filed at the Supreme Court seeking an order for resumption of all services at the hospital within 24 hours. Following the order, an association of health workers supporting Dr Singh has urged him to resume services at the hospital, however, the pro-Maoist hospital staffers have vowed to prevent Dr Singh from assuming responsibilities as the executive director.
