Adhikari grabs one-stroke lead

KATHMANDU, June 12: Ramesh Adhikari carded even-par 67 on Wednesday for a 54-hole total of three-under 198 to take a one-stroke lead over overnight leader Dhana Thapa and Nepal No 1 Shiva Ram Shrestha after the completion of the third round in the Ghanashyam Open Golf Championship being held at the par-67 Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC).



RNGC pro Adhikari, who carded one-under 66 and two-under 65 on the first two days of the second event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2013-14, took a turn with one-under 32 and completed the back nine at one-over 35 on Wednesday. [break]



Army Officers´ Golf Club pro Thapa and Surya Nepal Masters champion Shrestha were tied for the second place with a total of two-under 199. Thapa, who shot even-par 67 and four-under 63 in the first two rounds, carded two-over 69 on Wednesday.



Shrestha, who made a sloppy start in the event with three-over 70 on the first day and improved to one-under 66 on Tuesday, fired four-under 63 on Wednesday.

Shrestha and Rabi Khadka produced the best cards of the day as they both shot four-under 63 on Wednesday. With the improved performance, Khadka, who shot five-over 72 and even-par 67 on the first two days, jumped to the fourth place with a total of one-over 202 after a perfect third round on Wednesday.



Amateur Tashi Tsering and veteran Deepak Thapa Magar shared the fifth position with a total of four-over 205. Yelamber Singh Adhikari finished the day in seventh position with a 54-hole total of five-over 206 while Ram Thapa and Umesh Nagarkoti were tied for eighth with a total of six-over 207.



Bikash Bogati remained a distant second in the amateur section with a total of nine-over 201 while another young amateur Dinesh Prajapati was one-stroke behind Bogati. Bogati remained in the 10th position in overall, while Prajapati remained in the 11th position.



Leader Adhikari shot birdies on the second, ninth and 14th holes but suffered bogeys on the third, 12th and 17th holes. Overnight leader Dhana Thapa faltered on the very first hole, where he suffered a triple-bogey. He then suffered bogeys on the second, 11th and 18th holes while he shot birdies on the sixth, 10th, 13th and 16th holes.



Nepal No 1 Shrestha shot birdies on the second, fourth and 18th holes. He suffered a bogey on the 12th hole but an eagle on the 13th hole helped him produce a card of four-under.



Khadka shot birdies on the third, fourth, seventh, 10th, 12th and 17th holes against bogeys on the 13th and 15th holes.

Altogether 43 golfers -- 25 pros and 18 amateurs -- competed in the first two rounds of the event but the cut was applied at 13-over 147 and only 21 pros and six amateurs made to the final two rounds. The winner will get Rs 55,000 while other pros, who made the cut, will also get their share of cash prizes.
