In a recent wave of violence that has gripped the Middle East, at least 10 Nepali citizens lost their lives, and three others sustained injuries during the attacks launched by the Palestinian radical group Hamas on Israel. The victims, tragically, were students pursuing agricultural studies under the Learn and Earn Program sponsored by the Israeli government. These Nepali students from Sudurpaschim University had ventured to Israel in pursuit of their dreams, only to find themselves caught in the crossfire between the Hamas militants and the Israeli forces.

The situation in Israel remains dire, with Israeli officials reporting a grim toll of over 600 casualties and hundreds more injured. This ongoing conflict, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, paints a harrowing picture of violence and suffering. Approximately 4,500 Nepali citizens live in Israel, mostly working as caregivers. Some 265 of  them are students participating in various programs. Among the students, 119 are from Agricultural University, 97 from Tribhuvan University, and 49 from Sudurpaschim University. The attack on 17 Nepali citizens in an area near the Gaza Strip has brought the urgency of the situation to the forefront.

As a newspaper, we urge swift response from the Government of Nepal in providing financial support to the affected families and in organizing chartered planes to bring its citizens back home. The federal government has announced one million rupees and Sudurpaschim provincial government Rs 200,000 to each of the families of the deceased. These actions are crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of Nepali nationals in Israel, particularly those in danger zones. Furthermore, the decision to employ locals who are well versed in Hebrew for the rescue and repatriation efforts, as well as the establishment of a temporary transit home for returning Nepalis, demonstrates the government’s commitment to the welfare of Nepali citizens abroad.

It is heartening to hear reports of the Israeli army's efforts in rescuing Nepali students and ensuring their safety. The firsthand account of Lewis Rijal, a rescued Nepali student, provides a glimmer of hope amid the chaos and uncertainty. Still, the situation remains precarious, and every effort must be made to expedite the safe return of all Nepali citizens from Israel.

In light of these developments, as a newspaper, we urge both the Nepali and Israeli governments to continue their collaborative efforts to ensure the swift and secure evacuation of Nepali nationals from conflict zones. Every life is precious, and it is incumbent upon both nations to act decisively in this time of crisis.

As a nation known for its resilience and solidarity, Nepal stands united in its call for the quick rescue of its citizens in Israel. We also express our deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones and extend our prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. It is our fervent hope that peace and safety will soon return to Israel.
