Gurung, a key person of the gang of thirteen smugglers, was on the run for about three years, hiding in different places of Nepal, India and America, according to the police. [break]
CIB had been on the hunt for Gurung following the arrest of nine members of his gang, CIB Inspector Rajan Mainali said.
“The police arrested Gurung on Thursday, a day after he had returned from India, acting on a tip-off,” Mainali said. According to Mainali, Gurung was involved in poaching rhino horns from areas near Chitwan National Park. The police said Gurung has confessed to selling two horns to Korean customers three years back.
Gurung´s son, Tashi has been serving ten years jail term, along with other eight members, for his involvement in smuggling rhino horns, according to the police. Four smugglers of the gang are still at large.
Gurung has told the police that his two sons are settled in America and one in Kathmandu. Apart from his house in Ichangunarayan, Gurung owns two more buildings in Gairidhara and Budhanilkantha.
The police said that Gurung traveled to America frequently but still managed to evade arrest as he flew from India. Gurung has been handed over to the Chitwan National Park authority for further investigation.
