The selection process for the Kumari, who is highly revered by the indigenous Newar community, is meticulous and deeply rooted in tradition. The association responsible for the selection worked for nearly two years to finalize a suitable candidate. Official letters were sent to 15 bahals (traditional monastic courtyards) in the capital, requesting recommendations for eligible girls.

The Guthi Sansthan (a trust corporation that oversees religious ceremonies), along with the Panchang (astrological calendar) decision-making committee, chose two-and-a-half-year-old Aryatara as the new Kumari, in accordance with traditional procedures.

She will be enthroned at the Kumari Ghar (Kumari House) on Tuesday afternoon during a special ceremony held between 12:05 and 12:16 PM, accompanied by ritual worship. This day also marks Ashtami (the eighth day of Dashain), which is considered significant as it symbolizes Goddess Durga’s victory over evil.

On this occasion, the former Kumari, Trishna Shakya, will be ceremonially bid farewell with a musical procession.
