Moved with the then scenario of inferiority complex among women in the society and their nil participation in business sector, Bhawani Rana, in early decades of the 90s, thought of stepping ahead to empower women of the society.

Rana, who stands as Vice President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) at present, kept in her mind that economic empowerment among women in the society is the base of the entire women’s empowerment in the society. With this, it was all necessary for her to set an example from self. However, the set target of being a successful women entrepreneur was not, for sure, easygoing for her.[break]

Rana, who was keen on women’s issues from her early childhood, slowly started serving in different district chambers. Her business initiation started from her hometown. She actively participated in programs of Banke Chamber of Commerce and Industry and also began to raise women’s issues in business. Meanwhile, social barriers always hindered her path – the so called male-dominated society was among the chief. She entangled countable discouragement from male members of the society. However, her motivation couldn’t be influenced at all. Along with a number of social organizations and support from her family, strong-minded Rana moved ahead exploring potentialities of women in business.

After serving in different district chambers for around two decades, Rana thought to stand in the election of FNCCI in 2008.

“I believed that I could contribute lot for women entrepreneurs of the country and the entire business sector as an active member of the federation,” shares Rana.

There were still statements of discouragement from among members within the Federation regarding her ability and capacity to contest the elections. It was all her strong commitment that moved her ahead in the elections and made her win.

After she was elected as member at FNCCI, to serve the sector from a recognizable post became her next dream. Despite a number of suffocating discouragement, Rana fought for the position of Vice President of the Federation in 2010 and succeeded.

Rana, one among the notable women entrepreneurs of the country at present, also serves as Chairman of Sneha Group of Companies and Director of National Life Insurance Company (NLIC).

Determined to serve the business sector of the country, Rana says, “Women should never feel inferior to males. We have the ability to go parallel with males in all sectors. What we need is only a strong commitment among ourselves.

Meanwhile, Rana appreciates the enduring support provided by her husband, Asit SJB Rana.

“It was all his efforts that led me to a successful journey,” Bhawani says.
