POKHARA, March 23: As part of his five-day visit to Nepal, British Prince Harry met with the families of deceased Gurkha soldiers in Pokhara on Tuesday.

During his meeting, Harry offered heartfelt condolences to the families of Gurkha soldiers, who were killed in different countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan.

Harry, after landing at Pokhara airport, headed straight to the British Gurkha Camp in Pokhara. He spent around four hours at the camp, meeting the families of Gurkha soldiers.

Eight Gurkha soldiers were killed in Afghanistan while serving in the British army. Harry, who had personally known some of the deceased Gurkha soldiers while he joined the British forces in Afghanistan, had expressed his desire to meet the family members of the deceased soldiers, according to Regimental Association's chairperson Bhim Bahadur Gurung.

Harry was part of "Operation Herrick" in Afghanistan and Iraq. He worked alongside Gurkha soldiers during Iraq war for around four months and was very impressed by the soldiers, general secretary of regimental association Balkrishna Rana informed.

Renuka Rai had travelled all the way from Updaypur to Pokhara to meet Prince Harry. Her son Remond was a Gurkha soldier killed in Afghanistan war. "The prince asked me in English how we were doing, but I didn't understand. I handed him a letter," she said.

After her daughter-in-law got married again, the pension released on her son's name is claimed by leaving Renuka with no financial support.

Harry comforted the deceased Gurkha families sharing that people who join army have no certainty of their lives, Khadak Bahadur Rai, father of one of the fallen Gurkha soldiers, told Republica.
