According to a press statement issued by the Embassy of Korea in Kathmandu, the MOU was signed by Korean Ambassador to Nepal Choe Yong-jin and Finance Secretary Suman Prasad Sharma at a function held at the finance ministry.On behalf of Korean government, KOICA will spend US$ 8 million over a period of five years in five VDCs: Bhujhahawa, Guthiprasauni, Kudiya, Sanai, Tamasariya and Sunwal Municipality of Nawalparasi. The project will be implemented by District Development Committee, Nawalparasi.
According to Under Secretary Prakash Dahal, who heads Foreign Aid Coordination Section at MoFALD, the project is designed to support government's strategy to improve the living standards of people through the agricultural and rural development. "We intend to replicate similar projects in the other districts," said Dahal.
The project will build a contemporary development model through integration of local participatory planning process of GoN and Korean development model known as 'Saemaul Undong (SU), which the UN has recognized as successful and effective model of rural development.
"The overall goal of the project is to improve the quality of life of the target population through sustainable agricultural development, strengthening of social infrastructure, improving the quality of and access to Healthcare services and enhancing the capacity of the community and local government," said the statement.
