KATHMANDU, Sept 18: Nepali Congress (NC) on Friday asked the UCPN (Maoist) to withdraw its protests and end House disruption.

A central working committee meeting of the party requested the Maoists to end the protests, saying that the prolonged protests had negatively affected the constitution drafting process and hindered prorogation of the budget session of the parliament. [break]

NC Acting President Sushil Koirala informed the meeting that party president Girija Prasad Koirala had asked them to postpone the party´s Mahasamiti Meeting this year. The meeting has decided to take a decision on it on Saturday.

The meeting also asked the Maoists to immediately stop targeting NC activists in several parts of the country. “The meeting has decided to ask the Maoists to stop physical attacks on NC cadres,” said NC General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi.

Party central members also raised the issue of deteriorating law and order situation in the country and asked the government to maintain law and order.

The meeting also held preliminary discussions on a report presented by the party´s vice president Gopal Man Shrestha on Thursday on state restructuring. The report has proposed 16 provinces, including five in the Tarai-Madhes.

Earlier, two models of state restructuring had been proposed. The first model proposed seven provinces, while another model proposed five provinces. The CWC had asked Shrestha to bring changes in the report after several members, especially those hailing from Madhes, criticized the report.
