KATHMANDU, Aug 15: The country has witnessed 87 percent paddy plantation this year.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) said that the data it maintained till August 11 showed that paddy plantation was completed in 87 percent of land. This is seven percent less than the same period last year.

Spokesperson at the MoALD Sabnam Shivakoti said that the paddy plantation was completed in 1.4 million hectares of land till August 11. This is 87 percent of the total cultivable land for paddy plantation.

The paddy plantation was shrunk this year due to delayed monsoon in Madhes Province, Bagmati Province and Gandaki Province.

The rice transplantation continues till the end of the month of Shrawan. The MoALD, however, said it expects 92 to 95 percent paddy plantation till the end of this month.

Officials said Koshi Province had the paddy plantation in 94 percent of land, while Madhes had only 68 percent. Gandaki Province completed 93 percent of paddy plantation, while this has reached 98 percent in Karnali province, 93 percent in Lumbini province and 99 percent in Sudurpaschim province.

The MoALD further informed that Nepal began exporting tomatoes to India. Some 30 metric tonnes of tomato was exported to India via Kakarbhitta and Bhairahawa.
