South Africa wins toss, opts to bat against India in 1st ODI

KANPUR, India, Oct 11: South Africa captain A.B. de Villiers has won the toss and elected to bat first against India in the first one-day international of their five-match series.

South Africa, looking for its first ODI series win in India after losing three previous series and drawing one, will be bolstered Sunday by the return of pace bowlers Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel.Steyn and Morkel were rested for an earlier three-game Twenty20 series between the teams, which South Africa won 2-0. The third game at Kolkata washed out.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is playing his 100th ODI, leads the Indian bowling attack, along with leg-spinner Amit Mishra and allrounder Stuart Binny.

Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the two new-ball bowlers for India.

De Villiers said Sunday his team was hoping to maintain its momentum from the T20 series, while India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he was pleased to be bowling first.
