85 injured in Kanchanpur clashes

MAHENDRANAGAR, March 2: Eighty-five people have been injured in clashes with police in Kanchanpur on Monday. The demonstrators claim the government by deciding to set up Mid-West Regional University in Surkhet and Agriculture University in Chitwan neglected the farwestern region. [break]



Crowds of protestors with sticks on hand have been demonstrating in Kanchanpur from early morning Monday.



The demonstration started mainly by college students vandalized District Administration Office. Looting of shops in the course of demonstrations has been reported.



Police fired dozens of teargas canisters and rubber bullets to chase away the demonstrators. The injured are undergoing treatment at Mahendranagar hospital.



The students had reached the District Administration Office at 8:30 in the morning and vandalized the office when they could not find the chief district officer. They were planning to submit a memorandum to the government through the CDO.



Acting Chief District Officer Baldev Bohara is holding meeting of District Security Committee to thrash out strategy to contain protests that have gone out of control.
