Nepali athletes to train in Bangkok

KATHMANDU, July 31: Nepal Athletics Association is set to send eight players--four male and four female--to Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday for 40-day training to be held there as part of the preparations for the upcoming South Asian Games (SAG).

Surya Khatri (high jump), Dilli Khatri (long jump/triple jump), Ashish Chaudhary (100 m and 200 m sprint) and Mukti Bahadur Khadka (800 m sprint) are the male players, while Sima Kumari Tharu (javelin throw), Amrita Mahato (discus throw), Saraswati Bhattarai (800 m and 1500 m sprint) and Saraswati Chaudhary (100 m and 200 m sprint) are the female players to take part in the special trainings in Bangkok.

Rajiv Shah, the president of Nepal Athletics Association and Constituent Assembly member, said the Asian Athletics Federation and Thai Athletics Association provided US$ 10,000 and US$ 6,000, respectively, to facilitate the training in Thailand. Shah opined that the training would be fruitful for increasing the competitiveness of Nepali athletes.

Nepali athletes will also compete in the 61st Thai Open Athletics Championship slated for September 6-10 after completion of the training. The team is also accompanied by coaches Bikram Thapa and Rakesh Bajracharya, while while Santosh Shrestha has been assigned the responsibility of team manager during the team's stay in Thailand.
