KATHMANDU, Sept 30: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said the incumbent government was trying to muzzle up the freedom of the press.

At a festive greetings exchange program organized by Nepal National Magar Association Province 3 committee in the capital on Monday, President Deuba argued that NC would never compromise in defending free press as it is the backbone of democracy.

On the occasion, Deuba, also the former Prime Minister, urged the government to reinstate three journalists working in Radio Nepal Dipayal Office.

Also speaking on the occasion, NC vice president and former Deputy Prime Minister Bimalendra Nidhi accused the ruling party of mobilizing its cadres to launch attacks on NC.

The party will not stay tight-lipped if action is not taken against the guilty, Nidhi added.

NC General Secretary Dr Shashanka Koirala said the government was failing to implement the constitution and meet peoples' aspirations. The government also failed to make the proper allocation of the budget in three tiers of government, he noted.

NC central committee members Deepak Giri, Uday Shamsher Rana, Sindhuli NC President Ujjal Baral, Magar Association Chair Om Thapa Magar and leader Mohan Baral, among others, also highlighted the need of a robust Congress for safeguarding democracy.
