NEW DELHI, April 23: The TV network Al-Jazeera is off the air in India following a 5-day suspension ordered by the government over maps the network used to illustrate the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.

India is deeply sensitive about how Kashmir, a region divided between India and Pakistan but claimed by both, is portrayed on maps. An Indian report said that in the Al-Jazeera maps, areas of Kashmir had "not been shown as a part of Indian territory." The suspension began Wednesday and is to end next Monday.

The Qatar-based network condemned the suspension and asked for talks with the Indian government, saying it had altered the maps as soon as the government pointed out the issue.
