Over 50,000 migrants , 150 Nepalis arrested in Saudi Arabia

SAUDI ARABIA, Nov 7: Police have arrested more than 50,000 migrants including 150 Nepalis as soon as the deadline of amnesty was over here in the kingdom.



A combined force of Saudi Civil Police and Traffic Police have taken hold of more than 500 migrants from Seiko Garden of Damam itself, of which 150 are Nepalis.  [break]



Hari Ghimire, representative of Nepali Embassy for eastern region, said a legal proceeding has been brought against 70 migrants out of those arrested.



It is learnt that over 13,000 migrants have been arrested from Zizan bordering Amman. Similarly 7,819 from old capital Jeddah, 6,874 from northern province, 5,501 from Mecca, 1187 from Najaran, 1,509 from Riyad, and 1550 from Madina.

It is estimated that there are more than 100,000 illegal migrants who do not fall under the amnesty category. Police are detaining only those walking on the streets and the ones residing in a group so far. The government is all set to carry out a raid on the residence housing illegal migrants, it is learnt.

Talking over phone, Nepali Envoy Udaya Raj Pandey said the Embassy is ready to rescue those Nepai migrants who do not fall under amnesty category.

Meanwhile, human rights activists and other concerned organizations have been urging the Saudi Police not to behave inhumanly while arresting the migrants.
