BUTWAL, Aug 6: Butwal Sub-metropolis has decided to build a Tharu museum reflecting the art and culture of the indigenous Tharu community at Shaurahiya of Motipur. The museum will be constructed on the riverbank of Shaurahiya that will spread in a land of five hectares. 

The sub-metropolis has said that the idea of the museum was developed for the preservation of the old traditional culture that is on the verse of extinction due to the development of new technologies.

A Detailed Project Report is being prepared for the museum construction.

The museum will be a part of the initiative to promote Tharu history, culture and a medium to protect the cultural identity for new generations, said Shivaraj Subedi, mayor of Butwal Sub-metropolis. 

The sub-metropolitan has already awarded the contract to a consulting company for preparing the DPR. 

Recently, a team of experts including the mayor, deputy mayor and a technician of the sub-metropolis, technician of Ripple Training and Consultant Services, the company preparing the DPR, visited a local Tharu community and collected their suggestions.

Guma Devi Acharya, deputy mayor of the sub-metropolitan city, hoped genuine inputs from the locals would help to give final structure of the museum. 

Acharya said the technical team is suggested to design the structure that would house traditional ornaments, dresses, paintings, statues, agro tools of the Tharu people as well as goods related to their lifestyle and history along with exhibition houses. 

The walls will be decorated with pictures or paintings that represent cultural festivals, dance and social lifestyle. The museum will include traditional houses displaying Tharu community and sacred god's room. 

A team comprising Chief Administration Officer Chakrapadi Sharma, Chief of Urban Infrastructure Development Department, Engineer Suman Shrestha, and Rukamagat Aryal, architecture of Consultant Company and Urban Planner, Madhusudan Baral and engineer Ayush Bhandari collected suggestions about the museum from the Tharu locals. They have suggested that the museum should be able to reflect the traditional treasure and importance of the Tharu community.
