Landslide kills eight in Syangja, Tanahun (Updated)

POKHARA, July 31: Landslides in Syangja and Tanahun districts killed eight people in the early hours of Friday. An additional four people were injured, while 20 households have been displaced by the landslides.



Five people were killed in Manandhar village, Chitrebhanjyang-5, Syangja, according to Chief District Officer Nanda Kishore Tripathi.



The landslide that struck at 2 a.m. on Friday swept the house of Til Narayan Manandhar, 89, who, along with his wife Bhuwanimaya, 77, and daughter-in-law Jogmaya, 47 were killed. Manandhar´s sons Tej Narayan and Ganga Narayan were injured.



The flood also buried the house of their neighbor killing Tika Maya Manandhar, 85, and his five-year-old granddaughter, Tripathi said.



The injured were brought to Western Regional Hospital in Pokhara on Friday for treatment.



A 25-member team of police, army and local administration has left for the site for rescue operation.



“But the team cannot go there in a vehicle as the road is obstructed at several places by landslides,” said Tripathi. “It will take 12 hours to reach the village on foot.



Meanwhile, in neighboring district Tanahun, another landslide in Gotdanda, Kinhu-1, a landslide around the same time killed three of a family. Among the dead are Babita Rasaili, 28, and her daughters Aarti, 6, and Amrita, 5.



The bodies of the deceased were recovered from the debris by locals Friday morning.



The landslide also swept away the house of Surya Pariyar. The site is located 45 kilometers south-west of district headquarters Damauli.
