70 ex-Maoist combatants turn to NA officer-cadets

BHAKTAPUR, Aug 26: Seventy former Maoists combatants selected for the posts of officer-cadets have been presented insignia of lieutenant rank into the Nepali Army amidst a function at the Bhaktapur-based Nepalese Military Academy on Monday.



Khila Raj Regmi, Chairman, Council of Ministers and Chief of the Army Staff Gaurav Shumsher Rana jointly presented the insignia of the rank to the candidates who had successfully completed the basic military trainings for the past nine months.



IEC Chairman Regmi observed the passing-out parade.  “With the insignia of the cadets, the final phase of the integration process of Former Maoist Combatants has come to an end following the remarkable achievements in the entire peace process," Regmi said addressing the function at Kharipati. He wished for the successful journey of the passed-out cadets expressing hope that they would contribute for the sake of national interest and development. Regmi also appealed in building common approach for holding a successful CA polls scheduled for November 19 .



On the occasion, coordinator for the Special Committee (for the supervision, integration and rehabilitation of former fighters), Balananda Sharma said, “This day has marked a successful conclusion of the entire integration process. We are happy to see the peace process has come to an end.”



Similarly, UCPN (Maoist) leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara said, "Joint efforts of our party, other political parties and the Nepal Army  led towards the logical conclusion of the army integration process."



Out of 70 officer-cadets, Yam Bahadur Adhikari will be given the post of colonel. Bashudev Ghimire and Padam Bahadur Tamang will be given the post of lieutenant colonel as per the erstwhile agreement. The passed-out cadets will join a three-months bridging course before bearing the responsibilities. UCPN Maoist Chairman Puspa Kama Dahal, leader of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba, and leaders from major parties, ambassadors, families of the passed out cadets among others attended the function.
