Speaking at a programme organised by the Girija Prasad Koirala Pratisthan and West Seti Concerned Society here Saturday, Minister Jha urged the company to proceed with the construction works without any doubt as investment atmosphere was being created in the country and top leaders of political parties have already signed a commitment paper to that end.
It may be noted that the Government of Nepal and Three Gorges in August, 2012 signed an agreement related to the construction of the West Seti Hydropower Project. As per the agreement, the construction of the 750-megawatt project had to be completed by 2019 AD. [break]
Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Wu Chuntai, Nepal Government high-ranking officials, Chairperson of the Investment Board and top political leaders and people from Doti, Baitadi, Achham and Bajhang in the far-western were also present in the programme.
Chinese Ambassador Wu said the construction of project would begin once the matters to that are settled at the policy, technical and local-level.
UCPN (Maoist) leader Lekhraj Bhatta stressed that the government should bring an energy policy. All the bodies concerned should be accountable to the public for the construction of West Seti, he added.
Likewise, Nepali Congress central members Dr Ram Sharan Mahat and Sujata Koirala and CPN (UML) leader Pradeep Gyawali admitted that major political parties have caused obstructions in increasing investment in the hydropower sector in Nepal.
Investment Board Chairperson Radhesh Panta, Director of the Department of Electricity Development DB Singh and Secretary at the Energy Ministry Bishwa Prakash Pundit suggested the government formulate a policy about the hydropower sector, keeping the interests of the nation in top priority.
