BAJURA, Aug 25: Two wards of Toli Village Development Committee (VDC) have been declared child marriage free zones.

A campaign had been launched under the joint initiative of Mukta Abhiyan, a local non-governmental organization (NGO), and Save the Children Nepal a year ago with the aim of rooting out the social evil prevalent in the rural areas of the country. [break]

As part of the campaign, awareness programs had been organized in ward 4 and 7 of Toli VDC. Locals in Toli are happy that the campaign has helped root out a social evil.

According to Ramesh Saud, Chairman of the Samaj Sudhar Child Club, nine children clubs in the VDC have been conducting various cultural programs to raise awareness against child marriages.

Tikaram BK of Save the Children Nepal said school going children are becoming increasingly aware on the physical, mental and social complexities resulting from early marriage.

The campaign is also being carried out in 10 other VDCs in the district. According to Bal Bahadur Saud, VDC secretary in Toli, Child Marriage Minimization Program has been implemented as child marriage is still prevalent in the society.

According to Lal Bahadur Rawat, of Piswin in Bajura, the campaign will be carried out in other VDC of the district as well.
