GORKHA, June 9: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba said on Sunday that his party will prevent the government from passing the Nepal Media Council Bill tabled in the Parliament.

Speaking at the party's assembly in Gorkha municipality, the leader of the main opposition said that NC will strongly oppose the Nepal Media Council Bill. "We will not allow the government from passing the bill from the parliament at any cost. The proposed bill, if endorsed, will curtail the media freedom. We won't let it happen," he said. NC President Deuba said that the NC is against the 'undemocratic' and 'autocratic moves' of the Oli-led government.

Deuba, who is also the former prime minister, accused the government of interfering in the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority to dismiss the mega cases of corruption carried out by those who are now in power.

NC President Deuba, who reached Gorkha on Saturday, visited Gorkha Durbar Square and offered worship there on Sunday morning. During the visit, he expressed concern over the slow pace of reconstruction of historic Gorkha Durbar Square. "The government has not paid attention to rebuild the earthquake-hit cultural heritages. I will take up this matter at the Parliament," he said.
