NEW DELHI, India, July 12: At least 23 police officers were killed in an ambush by suspected Maoists in eastern India Sunday, CNN quoted authorities as saying.

The police superintendent of Chhattisgarh state’s Rajnandgaon district was among the dead, top district official Rohit Yadav told CNN. He said 23 bodies have so far been received.

There was no immediate information about the total number of officers who were attacked. Rajnandgaon’s district police control room said the ambush occurred when the force was crossing a thick forest.
