LAHAN, July 31: Around 60 inmates in Rajbiraj Jail have contracted viral fever. The fever has been spreading due to lack of medicines.

“While 20 persons had contracted fever three days ago, it has now spread among 60,” said Jailer Bhagawat Yadav. Yadav complained that the jail administration is facing difficulty in treating the inmates as the center has yet to pay for the expenses incurred for their treatment last year. [break]

“We have been giving them medicines we requested from the District Public Health Office (DPHO) but that has not worked,” Yadav added. Yadav complained that the DPHO has also not supplied medicines as demanded by the administration.

“We don´t have any money to pay for their treatment,” he said warning that the all the inmates in the jail could contract the disease if not contained soon.

“We have already written to the center to make arrangements for the necessary resources to treat the patients,” he revealed.

The Rajbiraj Jail currently has 144 inmates, well over its capacity of 90 and over-crowding is also believed to have resulted in spread of the disease. More than 100 inmates in the jail had contracted viral fever last year.

Chief District Officer (CDO) Ram Prasad Ghimire could not be reached for comments.
