According to the Talbarahi temple Conservation Committee (TCC), the wall is in urgent need of repair. “The temple might sink if the compound walls around the temple are not repaired immediately,” said committee members.[break]
Two weeks ago, TCC had submitted a proposal to the Kaski District Administration Office (DAO) demanding instant repair of the temple´s walls. “As per the recommendations of the technicians of Pokhara Valley City Development Committee, we have proposed erecting a roller compacted concrete wall by decreasing the water level of the lake by at least six feet,” said Mitra Lal Pahari, vice-president of TCC.
The compound walls around the temple were built in 1982. Since, the walls around the temple have not been repaired. The Talbarahi temple spread in an area of over three ropanies.
However, people who depend on Phewa Lake for livelihood, have protested the TCC proposal to repair the walls by decreasing water level in the lake. They have demanded that the walls be repaired without decreasing the water level. Hundreds of boatmen and the Jalari community depend on the lake for livelihood.
Meanwhile, a nine-member study committee has been formed under the leadership of Ram Prasad Aryal, chief division engineer of Regional Irrigation Division Office, Syanga, to find other possible ways to repair the walls without decreasing the water level in the lake.
TTC has decided to provide Rs 4.2 million for repairing the walls, said Pahari.
