57-member team to leave for COP

KATHMANDU, Dec 6: After the historic cabinet meeting at Kalapatthar plateau on Everest on December 4, the government is now embarking on another initiative on the sidelines of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen to draw global attention to climate change impacts on the Himalayas. In carrying forward the messages of the Summitteers´ Summit to Save the Himalayas declaration and the Kalapatthar declaration on climate change, the government will organize a Summitteers´ March in Copenhagen on December 11, coinciding with the International Mountain Day.



Minister for Forests and Soil Conservation Deepak Bohara will lead a delegation of 57 members on Monday to Copenhagen. Another five ministers will join the team. Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala, Finance Minister Surendra Pandey, Tourism Minister Sarat Singh Bhandari, Environment Minister Thakur Sharma and Minister for Culture Dr Minendra Rizal are the other ministers who will join the team later for the march. The team includes 32 summitteers, including 19-time Everest climber Apa Sherpa, Dawa Steven Sherpa, Ang Rita Sherpa, the oldest Everest climber Min Bahadur Sherchan, 16-time Everest conqueror Phurba Tashi, youngest female climber Nimduma Sherpa and others. The team includes 12 women summitteers.



Also, joining the summit are famous names like Peter Habler, the Austrian summitteer who climbed the Everest without oxygen backup; Byron Smiths, the Canadian Everest summitteer, the Mayor of Prague and Everest climber Pavel Bem and others. The march will last for an hour on the Copenhagen street.



The event is funded by the World Bank Nepal, Danish Embassy in Nepal, Nepal Mountaineering Association and Nepal Association of Trekking Agents together with the Hotel Association of Nepal, Travel Agents´ Association of Nepal, Union Finance, Buddha Air, Himalayan Bank, UNDP, DfID, WWF Nepal, and other agencies.



Talking to journalists on Sunday, Bohara said, "In line with the historic cabinet meeting at Kalapatthar and the Summitteers´ Summit to Save the Himalaya declaration adopted by the government, we will push forward the agenda of the Himalayas to get broader consensus from international community," adding, "´I am confident that the issue will be well-heard by the global community and environmentalists."



"This is a positive movement to save the Himalayas and the world from the perils of global warming," he said.



Like in the Everest cabinet meeting, the government will spend only Rs 1 for the Summitteers´ March, he said.
