A press statement issued jointly by Robert Piper, UN Resident and Humanitarian Cordinator, and Axel Plathe, UNESCO representative to Nepal, said failing to bring perpetrators of crimes against journalists to justice leads to impunity that in turn perpetuates the cycle of violence against media professionals. “The emerging, horrific details of the circumstances of Dekendra Raj Thapa’s death in Dailekh in 2004 are a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety of journalists in Nepal,” the statement said.
The UN also expressed concerns over threats received by journalists reporting Thapa´s case. The global body warned that the failure to bring the culprits to justice will ultimately obstruct the achievement of a sustainable peace and the rule of the law in Nepal.
