KATHMANDU, Jan 2: Amidst deepening controversy over the appointment of new priests at the Pashupatinath Temple, the Supreme Court on Friday ordered Ministry of Culture and State Restructuring and the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT), asking them to bar the new priests from conducting worship at the country’s most revered temple.

“We sent tamildars (court staffs who serve court orders to plaintiffs and defendants) to serve the orders on Friday,” said Hemanta Rawal, co-spokesperson at the Supreme Court.

On Thursday, the apex court, taking up a public interest litigation, ordered the government and PADT to allow the old priests to continue their job at the temple and bar the new priests from offering worship until the court decides the constitutionality of the appointment of the new priests.

Despite the court order, the new priests offered worship at the temple on Thursday. If they continue offering worships at the temple even after the serving of the court order Friday, they will be subject to punishment under contempt of court charge.
