TANAHU, Oct 7: A woman from the Dalit community, which still faces exclusion in Nepali society in the use of water from sources used by so-called higher castes, mortgaged her land and borrowed from neighbors to provide drinking water for over 100 households in her village.

Kashimaya BK, 51, of Jamune VDC-7 invested her money to bring drinking water from two kilometers away to her village. She invested all by herself to install a water tap as well as a roadside resting spot or chautaro.[break]

“The people in the village were facing the problem of drinking water. I installed the water tap to help the village and leave a lasting imprint in my community,” said Kashimaya.

After mortgaging two aana of land and borrowing from the villagers, she put together Rs 260,000 to meet the cost of the drinking water facility. “I took a loan of Rs 120,000 from a cooperative against my land and managed the rest of the amount from my salary and borrowings,” she said.

She did not let anyone else share the expense of installing the water tap and the chautaro. She installed them in memory of her late parents and her granddaughter.

According to Subhadra Ghimire, a local teacher, Khashimaya did not accept her offer to share the expenses. “I had proposed to her that I would support her in repaying the loan but she declined," said Ghimire.

Kashimaya, a teacher at Janapati Higher Secondary School, has borrowed between 5,000 to 20,000 rupees from neighbors to complete the drinking water facility.

She is also planning to build a school in memory of her late granddaughter Akriti, who died in an accident.
