KATHMANDU, Oct 27: The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has said that it will process as many as 5,000 applications for driving licenses daily.

Loknath Bhusal, information officer for the department, informed Republica that online applications have been open since Monday evening and 21 transport offices across the country will process 5,000 applications daily. “The quota has been fixed as 21 offices across the country and we cannot accept more than 5,000 applications daily,” he added.

With the quota of 5,000 applications, it seems to be difficult to apply online.

The written and trial examination of the driver's license was halted from April 29, but the Bagmati Provincial Government has been conducting written examinations and trials since September 5.

According to the DoTM, more than 300,000 online service seekers in the Kathmandu Valley alone have not been able to participate in the trial exams yet. More than 700,000 service seekers have been waiting for the trials by filling online forms during the period of January to April.

However, the date for examinations till January 2022 has been booked as the Transportation Management Office has not been able to provide services as per the pressure of the service recipients.

The department has stated that 300,000 to 400,000 service seekers are still waiting for the trial in the Kathmandu Valley. They will be able to participate in the tests within 3-4 months.

According to the NADA Automobiles Association of Nepal, the number of purchases of two-wheelers has more than doubled since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country.

However, there is a lack of coordination as the Department of Transportation Management is under the federal government and the Transportation Management Offices are under the provincial government. As a large number of people apply for licenses, there has been a problem in providing swift services.
