NEPALGUNJ, June 5: A dozen businessmen in Bansgadhi of Bardiya district were beaten up for defying the Tharuhat region banda called by the Tharu Rashtriya Mukti Morcha, a sister organization of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), on Friday.

Maoist cadres beat up the businessmen for defying the banda called in Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts of western Nepal. The businessmen had reminded the Maoist cadres that Bardiya had been declared strike-free some time ago.

An all-party meeting had declared Bardiya a strike-free district last month.

Two of the businessmen sustained severe injuries and have been taken to Nepalgunj for treatment.

The dispute between the Maoists and the businessmen had started after the former tried to set a local Netraraj Poudel´s shop on fire for not closing it.

Normal life in the five districts was affected by the banda called to protest the president´s reinstatement of Nepal Army Chief Rookmangud Katawal. Vehicles didn´t ply, and educational institutions and shops too remained closed.
