KATHMANDU, Sept 6: A training program on ´Better Livestock Management for Better Yield´ held jointly by Agricultural Development Bank Limited (ADBL), Israel´s Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV) and the Embassy of Israel in Nepal concluded in Kathmandu on Thursday.

The 11-day training, participated by 25 livestock entrepreneurs and ADBL staff, mainly focused on providing managerial and technical skills to those involved in dairy cattle farming.[break]

The sessions incorporated topics on dairy health program, feeding strategy for improving milk production, nutrition, reproduction and fertility management, housing and milking management, cattle breed selection techniques, budgeting and cost analysis.

Speaking on the occasion, Finance Minister Barshaman Pun said: “Training is the key to increasing productivity in the livestock sector as high productivity can only ensure survival of businesses in this competitive age.”

The minister also identified low productivity in the agricultural sector as the key factor that was holding back country´s GDP growth rate, as agriculture makes a contribution of 33 percent to the gross domestic product.

“Since most of the techniques embraced by farmers are either hearsay or based on traditional knowledge, which are risky, training should be incorporated as integral part of every agri-based business model,” the minister said.

Israeli Ambassador to Nepal Hanan Goder, on the other hand, said his government would be more than happy to organize such training sessions in Nepal.

“We still have not forgotten that Nepal was one of the first nations in the world that had acknowledged Israel as an independent state. Our support will always be there for Nepalis,” he said.
