60 bitten by snake in 3 weeks, 5 die

DHANGADI, July 12: Five people of the over 60 people bitten by snake have died in Dhangadhi in the last three weeks alone. “Around five to 12 persons bitten by snake are being admitted to Seti Zonal hospital every day. The emergency ward of the hospital is currently occupied by none other than snakebite victims,” said Krishna Bohora, in-charge of the emergency ward.



According to him, people from Malakheti, Julari, Godawari, Shreepur and Kanchanpur, among other area are most vulnerable to snake bite. “A large number of snakebite victims are from these areas,” he said. [break]



The deceased have been identified as 16-year-old Sunita Chaudhari, 38-year-old Kumaridevi Oli, 35-year-old Padam Jaisi, 60-year-old Dhana Bahadur Rokka and 55-year-old Jalfadevi Updahyay. The deceased were from Dhangadi and Kanchanpur districts.



“In most of the cases, people were bitten while asleep or working in fields. Most of the victims have been bitten by krait or cobra snakes,” Bohora said.



The situation in Bheri Hospital is no different either. An eight-year-old Anuradha Thapa of Rajhena - 4 admitted to hospital after snakebite is in critical condition. She was bitten by snake on Sunday evening and admitted to the hospital only on Monday. “We rushed her to the hospital only after we realized that our daughter had been bitten by snake,” Thapa´s mother Padma said.



According to Homnath Subedi, health assistant at the emergency ward of the Bheri hospital 15 people bitten by snake have so far received treatment from the hospital. “One has died so far,” he said.
