KANCHANPUR, Feb 22: Thirteen inmates of Kanchanpur prison have been staging a fast-unto-death demanding commuting of their remaining sentence to amnesty.

They have resorted to the act after the file about the recommendation made to Department of Prison Management to set them free went missing. The recommendation was made by the prison and the District Administration Office.[break]

It may be noted that the recommendation to free inmates who have completed more than half of their sentence and those with good conduct are made on the occasion of Democracy Day every year.

However, only one of the inmates recommended to be set free from Kanchanpur prison was released.

Meanwhile, fellow inmates too have come in support of the 13 inmates staging the hunger strike. In support, the remaining inmates have been boycotting the counting that takes place in the morning and evening.

The agitating inmates have warned to continue with the fast-unto-death until they are released.

Chief of the Prison, Dhan Bahadur Chand said a response from the Department of Prison Management was being expected.

Meanwhile, the health condition of the agitating inmates is reported to be deteriorating.
