KHANDBARI (SANKHUWASABHA), Jan 10: After nearly 80 percent completion of the construction work of the 900 MW Arun III Hydroelectric Project in Makalu Municipality, Sankhuwasabha, around 400 families are to receive compensation for their land acquired for the project.
The Supreme Court issued an order on December 26, 2024, directing the project to pay the compensation within one month as per a notice published by the District Administration Office, Sankhuwasabha, on April 6, 2023. At that time, the district administration had set the compensation for 524 ropanis of land along the 24 km access road from Chyangkuti to the power plant at Rs 1.18 million per ropani. The Arun-3 Power Development Company Limited had deposited Rs 530 million into the administration’s escrow account for the affected families.

Nearly 400 families’ homes and land are located along the project’s access road. Following the Supreme Court's writ, a letter was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, as reported by Chief District Officer Binod Kumar Khadka. The completion of the tunnel work for the Arun III Hydroelectric Project was announced on June 4, 2024.
