“Maoists are lining their pockets by taking the perks and salaries of such combatants and that´s the reason why they are delaying the integration process,” he claimed.
The prime minister´s statement comes amid speculations that many of the combatants might have already deserted the camps. The UNMIN registered 19,602 Maoist combatants in December 2007 following the comprehensive Peace Agreement between the government and former rebels.
Of the 4,008 disqualified combatants, around 40 percent had deserted the cantonments. This came to light after the discharge process from the cantonments completed on February 8.
Nepal also accused the Maoist party of draining the state coffers by enjoying the salaries of such combatants and using it as a major source of income for the party. He also warned that the government would not tolerate any longer if the Maoists continue such behavior. He also claimed that the Maoists are throwing dust in the eyes of international community.
While expressing government´s commitment to constitution drafting and peace process, Nepal said that the government has been facing problems due to Maoist activities.
On Friday, Nepal also observed the Cancer Hospital being constructed at Khajura, Banke. On his way to the hospital, Maoist activists greeted him with black flags. Police had to intervene to prevent any untoward incident. Due the security check-ups, many had returned home without attending the function.
