Police then issued an arrest warrant against him for involvement in "state subversion." But Karki quit the NC four years later and joined the Janabadi Morcha led by Ramraja Prasad Singh, the vociferous proponent of republic. [break]
Police issued another arrest warrant after the successive explosions carried out by Janabadi Morcha in 1985. Shortly after, Karki joined the CPN (Masal) led by Mohan Bikram Singh, and in 1986 he, along with Dr Baburam Bhattarai, joined the Unity Center led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
As a party central committee member, he was made in-charge for the eastern command of the underground CPN (Maoist), and he also worked in the party´s foreign affairs department.
He then moved to India and worked as the party´s representative in Delhi where he played a crucial role in expanding the party´s relations with the left intelligentsia in India and beyond.
Indian police arrested Karki in 2001 in Delhi and handed him over to Nepal Police in Nepalgunj. After serving a jail term he was released during the second round of talks between the government and the Maoists.
Currently in-charge of the Maoist Limbuwan state committee, Karki was nominated as ambassador to France, but did not get to assume the post as the then government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal collapsed following controversy surrounding the sacking of then army chief Rookmagud Katawal.
Asked by Republica what difference he would make following his appointment as Nepal´s ambassador to India, Karki said: "The support of friendly countries, especially neighboring countries, is very important during the transition. I would work in that direction".
