SPORTS BRIEFS: Karate selection goes smoothly

KATHMANDU, Aug 31: The selection of karate players on Wednesday, at the covered hall of National Sports Council, went smoothly without any dispute for the first time in nine years.



The past selections used to be full of disputes. The selection was done to pick out players for the special training for the upcoming 12th South Asian Games.[break]



Altogether 10 players were selected, out of 134 men and 57 women, for the special training. In the women´s category, Roji Nagarkoti in 55kg, Laxmi Bhatta in 61kg and Ganga Devi Adhikari in the 68kg weight categories were selected whereas in the men´s section Sunil Lama in 55kg, Binod Maharjan in 60kg, Mukunda Maharjan in 67kg and Binod Shakya in 75kg weight categories were selected.



In the finals of the selection, the 11th SAG participant Nagarkoti beat Sarita Shrestha. Another selected player, Bhatta beat Sapana Lama. The gold medalist of the 11th SAG, Adhikari defeated Pashupati Chaudhary. The participants of the 16th Asian Games Tara Gurung did not participate in the selection.



In the men´s section, gold medalist of the 11th SAG Lama beat Rakesh Maharjan while Mukunda Maharjan defeated Diwas Shrestha. Kushal Shrestha, silver medalist of the 11th SAG, did not participate in the selection. The gold medalist of the 11th SAG, Shakya overcame Diger Dev Bhatta.



The silver medalist of the 11th SAG Anu Adhikari, Mallika Thapa and Bijay Lama were selected on Tuesday.


Premier, Prime lift titles
KATHMANDU: Premier and Prime College lifted the trophy of First NCHE Basketball Tournament on Wednesday in the girls and boys categories. In the finals held at GAA Hall, Thamel, Premier beat Golden Gate 91-62. Siddhartha Maharjan scored 22 points for the winning team. In the girls section, Prime beat Premier 27-21 with eight points from Gyanu Gauchan. Bikram Dangol of Golden Gate and Mrinalini Shrestha of Prime were adjudged the Most-Valuable-Player of the tournament.



New Summit, Deneb in semis
KATHMANDU: New Summit, HEMS, Deneb and Kathmandu English School have reached semifinal of the Second PABSON Mid-region Basketball Tournament. New summit thrashed Occidental 24-8 with nine points from Rachana Ghimire. HEMS beat Marvelous 14-3 with the help of Sarita Bista´s nine points. Deneb defeated Blooming Scholars 11-3 and Kathmandu English overcame Suryodaya 11-8. In the boy´s section, Deneb, Marvelous, Occidental and New Summit have reached quarterfinal.



Basnet receives leadership award
KATHMANDU: Founder president of Taekwondo ITF Nepal Laxman Basnet received leadership award by the Taekwondo Hall of Fame on August 25. Basnet was awarded at a function held in Taekwondo headquarters in Kukkiwon, South Korea for his ´outstanding leadership´ in Taekwondo ITF Nepal. Altogether 60 individuals from 21 nations were presented with different awards during the function. The awards were distributed by the Founder of Taekwondo Hall of Fame Master Gerard Robbins



15-member team in Mt Everest Taekwondo
KATHMANDU: A 15-member taekwondo team will arrive Kathmandu to participate in the First Mount Everest Taekwondo Championship to be held from September 22 to 24 in the capital. Among 14 weight categories included in the event, Bangladesh will participate in 11, including three in women´s and eight in men´s category. As per the rule of championship, only one player can participate in each weight category from a country. Korean Lee Joo Sang is the coach of Bangladeshi team.
