KATHMANDU, Aug 31: “We have learned to ask ourselves what we have given to the country, rather than what the country has given us,” said Rajendra Singh Bista, advisor for KASAM Project. Indeed, the students of Kathmandu College of Management (KCM) have dared to dream and make it true.

The students of batch of 2010 to 2014 of KCM along with KCM Student Council and its Social Welfare Club carried out KASAM Project to build five sanitary latrines in Kalikot district and to raise awareness about sanitation among the locals via Kalasheela Primary School, from July 9 to August 14. Project coordinator Kaushal Sapkota said, “We just went ahead with our enthusiasm not knowing how we would complete this journey.

We walked 75 kilometers in two days, in rain, and braved landslides.

Our journey was extremely adventurous and challenging, yet we had a new experience and the locals were very supportive. At some points, the locals carried us across rivers. We literally did all the work.”

Chaudhary Group, Growing Service Leaders (CG GSL), along with Action Aid International and New Holland Agriculture and Global Bank Ptv Ltd contributed Rs 240,000 for the project.

Nepal government’s School Led Total Sanitation (SLTS) project has been working toward spreading awareness about sanitation in schools.

Khane Pani Development has planned to make Kalikot an open defecation free zone by 2014. This initiative is indeed a huge step toward achieving this goal.

Also, such spirit is an inspiration for other youth. “If one group from a college can initiate a change, then can’t 74 others take up the responsibility for the other districts?” added Kaushal.
