Budget will address UDMF demands: Finance minister

KATHMANDU, July 10: Finance Minister Finance Bharatmohan Adhikari has assured the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) that its demands would be addressed in the annual budget.



He said the budget would be balanced and would accommodate the demands of the UDMF. “I assure that the demands of UDMF would be addressed in the budget,” Atmaram Sah, General Secretary of Madhesi People´s Right Forum-Republican, quoted as Adhikari saying. [break]



The finance minister´s assurance comes after the UDMF leaders submitted a six-point memorandum to him at his office in Singha Durbar on Sunday.



The Madhesi leaders have warned minister Adhikari that they would not allow the government to pass the annual budget if the government fails to address their demands.



The UDMF has demanded that the government allocate Rs 5 million to establish schools in the name of 52 martyrs of the Madhesh movement in their respective districts, Rs 20 million for the treatment and rehabilitation of those injured during the Madhes movement and construction of postal roads and the proposed East-West Railway in the Tarai region.



The UDMF has also asked the government to provide budget for establishment of the various universities in the Tarai and subsidies in the import of chemical fertilizers and other agricultural equipment.
