The arrest was made after a clash broke out between the police and the students, who had gathered outside Shrestha´s quarters at Buddha Chowk of Biratnagar demanding improved infrastructure in the university. The agitating students had hurled stones at the quarters breaking window glasses.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Bishwaraj Pokharel, a few window panes and the main entrance of the quarters have been damaged in the incident.
“The clash broke out immediately after we tried to stop the students from vandalizing the quarters,” said Pokharel. Students affiliated to more than 16 political parties had participated in the protest. [break]
Talking to Republica, ANNFSU (All Nepal National Free Students Union) student leader Wasim Alam said that they had been left with no option as the university administration turned a deaf ear to their demands.
“Only a few of the arrested students will face legal action, while the rest would be freed after interrogation,” said Pokharel.
Meanwhile, condemning the arrest, the students have padlocked the examination department and the library of the university.
