“Concluding that it is not necessary to incorporate this provision, the meeting has unanimously decided to remove this issue from the list of disputes,” said the statement issued by the CC secretariat on Friday.[break]
Top leaders of the major political parties, who are members of the subcommittee, rejected the idea which was earlier proposed by the UCPN (Maoist). The leaders said there is no need to incorporate the provision as another similar condition saying “it would be a citizen´s duty to be ready for mandatory service as and when required by the state” has already been included in the draft.
Earlier, the Maoist leaders were not ready to remove this provision while other parties stood firmly against it saying it was against basic democratic principles.
With the settlement of this contentious issue, the list of disputed points has now come down to 21. The subcommittee on Thursday had finalized the name of the new constitution as the Constitution of Nepal. They agreed to not add any adjective to the name.
Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who also heads the subcommittee, former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal from CPN-UML, Nepali Congress (NC) parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel, and Speaker Subas Nembang, among other leaders, were present at the meeting.
