KATHMANDU, May 4: A misfiring Three Star Club was "taught a lesson" by Mahindra Bansbari Football Club in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull A Division League Football Tournament as Bansbari registered a 1-0 upset victory on Wednesday.

In an earlier match, Samsung Jawalakhel Youth Club (JYC) thrashed a 10-man Armed Police Force (APF) Club 3-0 at the Dasharath Stadium. [break]

Bansbari´s Kenyan player Dennis Ovko Ochieng scored the only goal in the second half to earn three points for the newly-promoted team that had lost its opening match 0-4 against Army.

Wednesday´s victory was Bansbari´s first in its three encounters with the top-flight club, having lost twice earlier in its 30-year history, according to team manager Rajesh Shrestha.

Bansbari captain Dil Bahadur Tamang said the players were delighted to defeat one of the best clubs in the country. “It is like winning the league,” he said during the post-match press conference.

Bansbari clinched a deserved win as Bhola Rai, coming from behind, snatched the ball from Three Star defender Bikash Singh Chhetri near the box and exchanged quick passes with Sujan Limbu and before crossing it to Ochieng, who sent a powerful header into the net in the 54th minute.

Three Star, which had thrashed Koilapani Polestar Club 5-0 in its opener, didn´t play up to its mark as its misfiring players were never on target during the entire 90 minutes.

Three Star coach Meghraj KC said there was lack of coordination among his players. “There were lots of mis-passes. We will take this defeat as a lesson,” said KC.

The victory was a piece of good fortune for Bansbari coach Hari Om Shrestha whose target was to hold Three Star as he had opted to field a lone striker. “Three Star is a good team and our aim was just a draw. We had only one forward and our strategy was to counterattack. All we want in this league is to survive relegation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bishal Rai ´A´, Bishal Rai ´B´ and Karna Subba were on target as Jawalakhel secured a convincing win over APF.

Bishal Rai ´A´ scored the first goal in the 37th minute after APF defender Noor Raj Kafle failed to clear a cross from Jawalakhel skipper Jaggu Nath Khadka.

Bishal Rai ´B´ added the second goal from a free-kick from 18 yards after Saurabh Magar got the marching orders for his second bookable offense after bringing down Karna Subba in the penalty area in the 60th minute. Rai curled the resulting free-kick away from a wall of APF defenders and into the bottom right corner of the post.

Jawalakhel, having the advantage of one extra man, flared up the attacks and Subba completed the rout three minutes later. He received a pass from Amar Subba and shot home a powerful right-footer with keeper Samit Rajbhandari well-beaten.

Karna Subba missed narrowly on five more occasions as he raced up to the post ahead of other players but shot wide every time.

APF´s best chance came earlier in the 21st minute when striker Nirajan Malla met a cross from Krishna Lama and dribbled it past the opponents but his shot returned after hitting the post. Skipper Ganesh Lawati then shot the rebound over the bar.

The victory was an icing on the cake for Jawalakhel coach Kishor KC who was celebrating his 18th marriage anniversary on Wednesday.

Jawalakhel has six points from two matches while APF is yet to open its account.
