Issuing a press statement today, Prime Minister Khanal said he was shocked to hear about the death of Hasana Devi. “I would like to extend my heartfelt tributes to Hasanadevi, a historical personality who played praiseworthy role in Nepali democratic movement,” said Prime Minister Khanal in the statement.
“Four great Nepali heroes had sacrificed themselves during the declaration of public revolt against the then Rana regime for the national interest in 1997 BS,” the statement says. “The incident was a mile stone and historical move in the national democratic movement of the country.”
Born at Bangemudha of Kathmandu, Hasana Devi was married to Ganga Lal Shrestha in 1989 B.S. Ganga Lal was 19 years old when he was murdered by the then Rana rulers. Ever since, Shrestha´s life for the past 70 years has symbolized patience, cooperation and endurance.
Hasana gave birth to her son, Sashi Lal, just a day before her husband was hanged to death. As a result, she could not even visit her husband when he was jailed.
In the statement of condolences, Prime Minister Khanal has lauded the guardianship of late Shrestha to the family of Subba Bhakta Lal despite becoming a widow.
He has also described Hasana Devi as an inspiring historical figure for the Nepali women at large.
Just some hours before her death, Prime Minister Khanal had visited her at the ICU of the Hospital, and acquired information about her state of health.
