SPORTS BRIEFS: SNKC triumph

KATHMANDU, Feb 14: SNKC Sano Gaucharan edged Boudha Tamang Gumba 8-5 in the Club Mosses Cup Five-A-Side Knockout Football Tournament on Monday to book their place in the quarterfinals. The tournament is organized to help Spinal Cord Injury Association.



SNKC´s Hemanta Ale scored seven goals, while Suman Shrestha added one more. Gumba couldn´t avert his team´s loss despite Navaraj Lama putting up a great show with four goals and Mahabir Lama adding one. [break]


Innovative in Quarter Finals


KATHMANDU: Innovative English School defeated Trungram International Academy (TIA) 37-22 to reach the quarterfinals of the National U-14 Basketball Festival on Monday. Likewise, LRI and Gyanodaya also reached the last-eight. Innovative´s Ajaya Kunwar contributed 15 points for the team´s victory. LRI edged out Little Angels 25-11. Mikesh Rai scored 14 points for LRI. Meanwhile, Gyanodaya beat Mount Glory 34-28. In the girls´ category, Mahendra Bhawan saw off Valley Public 37-29 with 26 points from Shanti Shrestha and Gyanodaya walloped Angels´ Heart 34-22 with 10 points from Gautami Bhattachan.


Neric win title


KATHMANDU: Neric clinched the title of the First Ideal Junior Boys and Staff Basketball Tournament on Monday in the junior boys´ category defeating Odyssey International 29-13. Binod Bhandari, the most valuable player of the tournament, contributed eight points for Neric. Meanwhile, Kantipur English School bagged the fair play award. In the staff category, Saipal thumped Teresa 76-58 to win gold. Saipal´s Rajan Singh added 26 points to the winning team´s score.


Rating chess tournament in offing



KATHMANDU: Our Housing Rambir Shrestha Memorial Second Open Fide Rating Chess Tournament is all set to take place from March 11 to 16. The tournament is being organized in memory of the club´s founder, Rambir Shrestha. Matches will be held according to the Swiss League Format at Sajha Party Palace, Lagankhel. The winners will receive a total cash prize of Rs 60,000, including Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000, and Rs 7,000 for the top three players respectively. The organizers have invited a maximum of four players below 2200 rating from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Nepalese chess veterans Manish Hamal, Badri Lal Nepali, Keshab Shrestha, Surbir Lama and Nabin Tandukar will also compete in the event. The total cost of the tournament is estimated to be Rs 250,000, of which Rs 60,000 will be sponsored by Our Housing Company, Jawalakhel.



KCTC clinch Friendship series

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Cricket Training Center (KCTC) clinched the five-match Friendship series 3-2 against Kerala Cricket Club (KCC) on Monday. KCTC defeated KCC in the final match by 5 wickets at the Engineering Ground, Pulchowk, to seal the series. KCTC won the toss and invited KCC to bat first in the 35 overs match. With tight bowling from Nitesh Rawal, KCTC were able to restrict KCC at 138 runs in 31.3 overs. Rawal bagged four wickets in his 4.3 over spell conceding only 11 runs. Unbeaten Nakul was the highest scorer for KCC with 31 runs. KCTC reached the target in 19.5 overs losing five wickets. Man-of-the-match Ujjwal Thapa scored quick 53 runs off 39 balls that included four boundaries and a six.



Brihaspati victorious

KATHMANDU: Brihaspati School beat Greenland Children Academy (GCA) by 8 wickets in the 4th Chief of the Army Staff Inter-school Running Cricket Tournament on Monday. Winning the toss, GCA invited Brihaspati to bat first. Brihaspati scored 110 runs in 20 overs losing 6 wickets. Gyandeep Sherchan scored 25 runs off 27 balls. Brihaspati successfully chased the target in 16.2 overs losing two wickets. Nilabh Pandey and Bishal Shrestha were not out for 39 and 20 runs respectively.



Kantipur marathon on Saturday


KATHMANDU: Kantipur Publication is going to organize the First Kantipur Half Marathon on 19th February to mark its anniversary. The organizers will host half marathon of 21.1 kilometers, Kantipur Corporate Walkathon of three kilometers and Wheel Chair Race of three kilometers. The winners of the half marathon in both men and women categories will receive cash prize of Rs 50,000 while the winners of the Wheel Chair race will receive Rs 5,000.



Young Heart in QF


KATHMANDU: Young Hearts fixed their quarterfinal spot in the Fourth Daffodil Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Monday in the senior boys´ category. Young Heart beat the hosts Daffodil ´B´ 56-32 with 20 points from Sonam Sherpa. In other matches, Pennwood defeated Sambotta 56-55 and Golden Peak ousted Brihaspati 45-35. In the Fifth Junior Football Tournament, Bright Land thrashed the hosts 3-0.
