Karan Bahadur Saud, 30, had shot at Chand twice at the latter´s rented quarter in Baluwatar at 9:30 Saturday night but the celebrated commando instructor of Nepal Police dodged both shots to remain unscathed. [break]
According to Police sources, the constable was picked by Chand as his bodyguard nine years ago. Saud had fired Chand´s own service pistol.
Chand who took charge of MPCD one-and-a- half years ago, however, was not available for comments.
According to officials, Chand preferred not to publicize the incident even as he seemed traumatized following the incident.
Nepal Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Navaraj Dhakal said investigation into the incident is on and action against Saud would be taken only after ascertaining whether he had fired intentionally. Saud has been detained at the Number 1 Battalion inside the police headquarters.
Confidant´s betrayal
No sooner had Chand entered his bedroom after seeing off about half a dozen of his close friends who partied with him Saturday evening, Saud, reportedly drunken, had barged into the room to hold the former at gun-point.
Chand reacted bravely. He kicked Saud who then tripped and fell on the ground. Saud fired both the shots lying down on the floor. “Second time, he dodged the bullet cleverly,” said sources.
After the second fire, Saud ran away and locked himself up in the servant´s chamber downstairs. The rented two-storied quarter used by Chand as a rest house was soon visited by MPCD officials.
But it took the officials a whole night to talk Saud into surrendering himself. “He kept on warning that he would commit suicide but we waited for him to cool down till 5 am,” said officials.
According to officials, Saud of Kailali who would drink heavily with Chand had been showing abnormal behavior for the last few months. He was also known to have been disappointed for not getting promotion.
Chand transferred
Meanwhile, Nepal Police has transferred SSP Chand to Operations Department at Nepal Police Headquarters on Sunday. Chand´s position at MPCD has been replaced by SSP Hemanta Malla.
