Govt holds first cabinet meeting

KATHMANDU, Feb 10: In its first cabinet meeting, the Jhalanath Khanal led-government has decided to construct a tunnel linking Nagdhunga in Kathmandu to Jhyaple River of Naubise to ease traffic congestion in the Kathmandu Valley.



At the meeting held immediately after three newly inducted ministers were sworn in at the president´s office, Sheetal Niwas, the government decided to build the 2.4 kilometer long tunnel at the cost of USD 50 million. [break]



“The construction would tentatively take two years after which the traffic congestion in the valley would reduce significantly,” said newly appointed government Spokesperson Ganga Lal Tuladhar, who was sworn in without being given a portfolio.



Newly elected Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal and ministers Bharat Mohan Adhikari, Bishnu Poudel and Tuladhar were present during the cabinet meeting.



The meeting also decided to urge the political parties and stakeholders to facilitate conclusion of the peace process and writing of the new constitution.



“We also request other political parties to join the government for national consensus,” said Tuladhar and thanked the political parties who facilitated the formation of the new government.



Minister Tuladhar also claimed that the Maoists would join the new government. “I don´t think that our distance with the Maoists has grown wider. National unity government and national consensus government is the need of the hour,” he said.
