SPORTS BRIEFS: Bajracharya in semis

KATHMANDU, Dec 21: Sanrakshan Bhushan Bajracharya advanced into the semifinals of the Ninth defeated Jayakar Memorial National Junior Tennis Tournament on Tuesday defeating Jeevan Boillte 9-4 in the U-10 boys´ singles category.



Pranab Khanal, Arjan Dhungel and Nabin Joshi also won their respective matches held at the Satdobato Tennis Complex in the same category to secure semifinal berths. [break]In the U-10 girls´ singles, Anne Mathema, Karuna Gauchan, Mahika Rana and Mayanka Rana advanced into the semifinals winning their respective matches.



Likewise, Anushka Joshi, Rabina Gurung, Poonam Shrestha and Aslesha Lissanevitch secured the semifinal berths in the U-14 girls´ singles. Meanwhile, the players to make it to the quarterfinals of the U-14 boys´ singles are Bhramanda Singh Moktan, Abhishek Bastola, Subodh Udas, Abhaya Gauchan, Kevin Gurung, Sakchham Karki, Ivan Hoe Lissanevitch. Suyash Nahata earned a walkover from Ashok Kunwar.



Tharu clinches gold



Ram Chandra Tharu clinched gold during the First Madan Bhandari Memorial National Taekwondo Tournament in the black belt category of the men´s patron event on Tuesday. The armyman defeated Karun Lama in the title clash held at the Bulls Indoor Sports Hall, Basundhara.



Anup Rana won gold in the red belt category and Dharmendra Thapa secured the first position in the green belt category. The winner of the blue belt category was Gopal Chandra. In the women´s patron event, Sony Khadka won the title in the green belt category. In the blue belt category, Seema Saru lifted the title. Kabita Shrestha secured the first position in the red belt category. Nisha Wagle clinched the title in the black belt category. In the women´s sparring, Alisha Lama and Sharmila Saru advanced into the final in the 41-45 kg weight category. In the 46-50 kg category, Yog Maya BK set up a title clash with Junu Rai. Likewise, Tulasa Rajthala and Kabita Shrestha secured the final berths. Altogether 66 male players and 36 female players from the five development regions and the Nepal Army are competing in sparring and patron events in the tournament that will conclude on Wednesday.



Rara Hill, Panga in final



Rara Hill set up a title clash with Panga in the Second New Zenith Cup Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the senior boys´ category. Rara Hill disappointed the hosts New Zenith to register a hard fought 63-61 win at the hosts´ court on Tuesday. Bijen Maharjan contributed 27 points for the winners. In another match, Rulesh Maharjan scored 30 points for Panga as they hammered Pushpa Sadan 92-33. In the junior boys´ category, Pushpa Sadan and Kathmandu Newcastle made it to the final. Pushpa Sadan ousted the hosts 21-10 and Newcastle squeezed past Pannga 23-21 to secure the final berths.



APF receives judogis



Nepal Judo Association (NJA) provided eight sets of international standard judogis (dress) to the Armed Police Force on Tuesday (APF). A press release issued by the APF on Tuesday states that the dresses will be used by the APF personnels who will undergo the ´unarmed combat´ training at the APF Training School in Lamapatan, Pokhara. This is the first phase of support from the NJA. The NJA has pledged to provide various support to the APF to conduct the training.



NASA, Xavier Int´l in semis



NASA and Xavier International on Tuesday entered the semifinals of the Second BST Inter-college Basketball Tournament in the girls´ category as the winners and runners-up of Group ´B´ respectively. NASA thrashed Orient 40-21 at hosts BST College court, Gongabu to lead the group. Rohina Limbu contributed 17 points for NASA. In another match, Seema Karki contributed 24 points for Xavier International as they ousted Morgan College 35-20. Trinity earlier secured a semifinal berth as the winners of Group ´A´. In the boys´ category, VS Niketan, Canvas and defending champions Reliance International secured the last-16 berths.



NASA triumph



NASA registered a thumping 108-33 victory over ACMS in the men´s category of the Second South Siders Open Basketball Tournament held at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium on Tuesday. Robin Khatri scored the highest 30 points in the lopsided match. In another match, Sadish Pradhan scored 24 points for Whitehouse as they defeated Snow Leopards 72-35. Golden Gate outplayed Nakhipot Youth Club (NYC) to secure a 80-53 win with the help of 24 points from Bipendra Maharjan. NYC avenged the defeat against Golden Gate in the girls´ category to register a thrilling 42-40 victory. Rojina Gurung scored 11 points for NYC but the highest scorer was Golden Gate´s Neha Chowdhary with 15 points. Likewise, Snow Leopards defeated GAA 48-25 in the women´s category.
