Band Baaja Baaraat: Business of pyaar and pyapaar

KATHMANDU, Dec 19: After a star entry in Bollywood opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Zodi, actor Anushka Sharma was almost lost from the scene until she showed up in Badmaash Company. However, after the box office failure of the film, one would have hardly imagined that she would step back in Bollywood through Band Baaja Baaraat.[break]

With Yash Raj productions making stereotype romantic dramas one after the other, many certainly had least to expect from Band Baaja Baaraat, which is just another Yash Raj film.

Thank God, the Yash Raj banner finally got over Shah Rukh and Kajol and launched a completely new face – Ranveer Singh. Definitely the production house must have thought a million times before investing for the film as not only Ranveer is new to the Indian cinema, director Maneesh Sharma is also still a stranger for the Indian film business.

This directorial debut of Maneesh Sharma though is nothing jaw dropping; it is however a complete entertainment package. It is wise at the director’s part for not attempting too hard a novice filmmaker. As a result, the movie lands safely into the box office.

Sometimes it’s hard to believe how an onscreen chemistry between a pair can make the film look so joyous and enthralling. One such example is the chemistry that goes between the promising Anushka and the debutant Ranveer. Is this really his first time in a film, you are pushed to ask yourself many times!

Band Baaja Baaraat shows the colorful Punjabi weddings in Delhi through the eyes of wedding planners Shruti (Anushka) and Bittu (Ranveer), who befriend each other and decide to become partners of a wedding planning business, conceptualized by Shruti. The duo’s partnership clicks together well, taking them to unprecedented heights of popularity and success. With only one business mantra – Pyaar (Love) and Byapaar (Business) never go hand in hand. But these friends eventually end up having feelings for each other and things start to go sour.

The first half of the film proceeds well with a neat screenplay and an enjoyable script along with a colorful setting and fine acting but the second half quickly turns out to be so Yash Raj style – clichéd romantic drama.

The sets, the dialogues, and the chemistry between the two lead actors are powerful.

I have rated this movie as PG 18 because of the sexual content. Though these scenes are portrayed sensually, they however were not needed to be that long; almost for five minutes. One thing is for sure that “the serial kisser” of Bollywood Emraan Haasmi and sexy diva Mallika Sherawat now have found new competitors in Ranveer and Anushka. For his first project, Ranveer has surely taken up something daring enough to make him talk of the town for sometime.

There is nothing much to be said about the cinematography as the movie mainly focuses on tight shots and colorful sets and props. The soundtracks are fine but nothing extraordinary.

Though the movie fails to deliver anything with much gravity, it however succeeds to portray the scene of shaadis in Nayii Dilli and the growing trend of wedding planners. Of course, this was the right time for the producers to release the film.

(Screening at QFX Cinemas)
